Canadians now have access to an interactive online learning resource to increase understanding and awareness of substance use and addiction, and the stigma surrounding them.
Overcoming Stigma Through Language is a new bilingual resource that is being developed by the Canadian Centre on Substance Use and Addiction (CCSA) in partnership with the Community Addictions Peer Support Association.
The Sting of Stigma: Recognizing Stigma and its Impacts is the first of three modules in this resource. Weaving together the latest evidence, thought-provoking exercises and videos from experts in the field, including those with lived and living experience, this module will help Canadians recognize the various forms of stigma and its devastating impacts, and use language that demonstrates understanding and compassion for people who use substances.
Modules two and three, currently in development, will build on this learning with a focus on the science of substance use and substance use disorders, and on changing the conversation about substance use and addiction.
